Why Online Specialism Beats Local Proximity for the 11+

Whilst we do have a premium home tuition service for 11+ tuition in south Manchester, we also provide a more cost effective online 11+ tuition service for families looking to help prepare their child for 11+ exams in Manchester and Trafford.

Passing the highly competitive 11+ exams for Manchester and Trafford grammar schools requires a deep understanding of specific test providers (like GL Assessment). Limiting your search to a tutor who happens to live within a 20-minute drive of your home severely narrows your options. How It Works

1. Tell us what your child needs

Complete the short tutor request form and to let us know the type of support required. You can tell us whether your child needs help catching up, preparing for the 11+ exams, building confidence or aiming for a specific school.

2. We learn more and match your child with a tutor

After you submit the Request a Tutor form, one of our Education Consultants will call you to discuss your specific requirements and learn more about your child’s needs.

We’ll ask about the subject, level, goals, learning style, confidence and any particular areas where support is needed. We then use this information to carefully match your child with a suitable online tutor.

3. Your child starts their lessons

The majority of our 11+ lessons take place online using an interactive learning space with audio, video and digital whiteboard tools. Tutors can upload resources, explain concepts visually and work through problems with your child in real time.

4. You receive feedback

After lessons, parents receive written feedback so they can see what has been covered and what the tutor recommends next.

How does Online Tuition Work?

Our virtual online classrooms use digital whiteboards with integrated audio and video capability. The entire whiteboard contents can be downloaded after each lesson for your notes. Both tutor and student can write on the whiteboard and learning material can be uploaded to the learning space.

This means a highly effective and efficient one to one tutoring session can take place, without the pupil having to spend any time making notes.

When Should My Child Start 11+ Tuition in Manchester or Trafford?

Most families begin preparing for the 11+ at least 12 months before the entrance examination. For many children, this means starting tuition during Year 4 or at the beginning of Year 5. Some pupils benefit from an earlier introduction in Year 3, particularly if they need to strengthen core English and mathematics skills before moving on to school-specific 11+ preparation.

Understanding the Main 11+ Routes in Manchester and Trafford

The right preparation strategy depends on the schools your child is applying to, as entrance requirements vary across Greater Manchester and Trafford.

Trafford Grammar Schools Consortium

Five Trafford grammar schools share a common entrance test through the Trafford Grammar Schools Consortium:

  • Altrincham Grammar School for Boys
  • Altrincham Grammar School for Girls
  • Sale Grammar School
  • Stretford Grammar School
  • Urmston Grammar School

These schools use a shared GL Assessment entrance test. Preparation typically focuses on mathematics, verbal ability and non-verbal reasoning skills.

Loreto Grammar School and St Ambrose College

Loreto Grammar School and St Ambrose College are selective Catholic grammar schools in Trafford, but they operate outside the main Trafford Grammar Schools Consortium.

Both schools have their own admissions arrangements and entrance assessment requirements, so preparation should be tailored carefully to the latest information published by each school. These assessments may include English, mathematics and reasoning elements, depending on the school and year of entry.

Manchester Independent Schools

Selective independent schools in and around Manchester, such as The Manchester Grammar School, Withington Girls’ School, Manchester High School for Girls and Cheadle Hulme School, set their own entrance assessments.

These assessments often include a combination of English, mathematics, reasoning, writing tasks and interviews, but the exact format varies by school. For this reason, independent school preparation should be tailored to each target school rather than based on a generic 11+ programme.
