Exam Routes for 11+
Support for GL, CEM, grammar school consortia, ISEB and independent school exams
Entrance exam preparation is most effective when it reflects the exam your child is actually sitting. Principal Tutors can help families prepare for a range of 11+ and entrance assessment routes.
Grammar school 11+ preparation
Grammar school 11+ tests are selective entrance exams used by grammar schools and some partially selective schools. They may assess English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning, Spatial Reasoning or a combination of these areas.
The format can vary by area and school. Some regions use a common test through a local consortium, while others have school-specific arrangements. This is why it is important to understand the target schools before planning tuition.
GL Assessment 11+ preparation
GL Assessment is one of the best-known 11+ test providers and says its 11+ tests are used by the majority of grammar schools in the UK. GL-style preparation may include English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning, depending on the school or region.
Our tutors can help pupils build the underlying subject knowledge and exam technique needed for GL-style questions, including accuracy, timing, vocabulary, comprehension, problem-solving and reasoning skills.
CEM-style 11+ preparation
CEM assessments have historically been used by some selective schools and regions, and Cambridge Select Insight now provides computer-based entrance assessments for selective independent schools, partially selective state schools, grammar schools and fair banding admissions.
For CEM-style or Cambridge-style preparation, pupils may need strong core skills, flexible problem-solving, vocabulary, comprehension, numerical reasoning and the ability to work accurately under time pressure.
Regional grammar school consortia
In some areas, grammar schools work together through a local consortium or shared admissions arrangement. This can mean that one entrance test is used for several schools within a region.
For example, the London 11+ Consortium states that results are shared with all consortium schools to which the candidate is registered.
Our Education Consultants can discuss your target schools and local area so we can match your child with a tutor who understands the type of preparation required.
Independent school entrance exams
Independent school entrance exams vary widely. Some schools use written papers in Maths and English, while others include reasoning, creative writing, interviews, group tasks or online assessments.
A tutor can help your child strengthen the underlying academic skills needed for independent school entry, including comprehension, written expression, problem-solving, reasoning, vocabulary and exam confidence.
ISEB Common Pre-Test preparation
The ISEB Common Pre-Tests are online adaptive assessments used by many independent senior schools. ISEB states that the tests include four subjects: Mathematics, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning, and are often taken in Year 6 or Year 7.
Our tutors can support pupils preparing for ISEB-style assessments by building confidence with Maths, English, reasoning, timing, accuracy and question technique.
School-specific entrance assessments
Some grammar and independent schools use their own entrance papers or additional stages. These may include written tasks, interviews, creative writing or subject-specific papers.
If your child is applying to a specific school, tell us in the tutor request form. We will discuss your requirements and help match your child with a suitable tutor.
